How is capacity building the key to sustainable development.

For the creation of a more inclusive society every disabled person should be supported. The same way as everybody else, every person with physical or mental disability has talents and abilities in him or her. Despite that, it is evident that people with disabilities suffer from rather severe limitations in education, work, and societal integration. If we are to make the world for everyone therefore we need to shift from merely providing accommodations for the disabled, but aim at developing the human potential, and lead them towards a sustainable livelihood.
At TRRAIN, we firmly believe that capacity building is not just about training; it is about empowerment, independence and productive inclusion of persons with disabilities in the society. It is truly the key to sustainable development!
What is capacity building for disabled people?
Before we proceed to explain why it is essential to understand why it is important, let us first define what capacity building is. In simple words, capacity building is the process of creating and strengthening the capabilities of individuals and groups. It is a systematic and planned approach to enhance the capacity of an individual or a community to manage and overcome risks, make good decisions and create positive change for the future.
Now let’s answer what is capacity building program. A capacity building program therefore refers to activities and interventions that are planned over a period of time in order to build different competencies. Such programs are developed in collaboration with schools, NGOs for disabled people, or governmental organizations that work with the disabled.
Capacity building for disabled people involves a holistic approach that addresses various aspects of an individual’s life, including:
Skills development: This includes technical, vocational and life skills education that enables one to acquire the relevant skills for the job market and life.
Knowledge and awareness: Spreading information and educating the disabled, employers, employees, public and communities on disability rights, accessibility and health.
Attitudinal change: Changing the attitude of people towards the disabled and their disabilities, and challenging stereotypes.
Policy and advocacy: Promoting the rights and well-being of people with disabilities by advocating for their rights and provisions.
Infrastructure development: Providing people with access to buildings, various means of transport, and spaces open for the public.

The importance of capacity building for People with Disabilities
Capacity building is necessary for empowering people with disabilities and making them a part of the society. It can help to:
Reduce poverty and inequality: When people with disabilities are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to be in the workforce, it can help reduce poverty and inequality.

Improve health and well-being: Capacity building can also make quality healthcare and rehabilitation services accessible to people with disabilities.

Enhance social inclusion: When a person with disability is empowered to perform to the fullest of their capabilities, they become an active member of the society, contributing meaningfully.

Promote economic empowerment: Capacity building helps people with disabilities become economically independent, through vocational training and entrepreneurship opportunities.

Foster self-dependence: Capacity building can help people with disabilities develop the skills and confidence they need to live independently.
How can capacity building be done for people with disabilities?
Now that we understand what capacity building is and its importance, the question is: How can we make it happen? Here are some ways to build capacity for people with disabilities:
Education and skill development –
Ensuring that people with disabilities have what they need at school or any other learning place directly translates to them getting an equal chance to learn as anybody else.
Vocational training, computer literacy, and aptitude training for specific jobs should be conducted to assist talents in gaining confidence and securing jobs.
These programs should also be flexible and responsive to the disability that the person has.
Access to technology and assistive devices-
Facilities such as screen readers for the blind, hearing aids, or wheelchairs to help people navigate everyday life can allow people to learn and work.
Computers, smartphones, and the internet are needed for digital literacy as well as for career development.
Governments and organizations have to focus on the availability and affordability of technology to reduce the gap between those who are and those who are not connected to the online world.
Awareness and advocacy –
It increases awareness in the society that People with Disabilities face challenges, which helps reduce bias thereby creating a society with an improved perception towards the disabled.
Policy change is also an outcome of advocacy since governments and other organizations are persuaded to develop policies that will enable persons with disabilities to get equal opportunities.
It creates a culture that makes the society realize their potential without undue prejudice.
Workplace inclusion and supportive employment policies –
To empower people with disabilities, it is imperative to create jobs that can accommodate everyone irrespective of their disability.
Organizations may include disability-friendly infrastructure, flexibility in working hours and policies that protect them against discrimination.
Promoting self-employment among disabled people also has the added benefits of increasing their independence and confidence.
Health and wellbeing programs –
People with disabilities often have unique healthcare needs and must participate in rehabilitation and counseling.
Some capacity building activities that could be undertaken in this area are offering low-cost and accessible medical services, counseling sessions, and physiotherapy.
People with disabilities can benefit from health programs that aim at enhancing their health so that they can become productive members of society.
Community engagement and social inclusion –
Capacity building involves the strengthening of relations within the community, as well as embracing social bonds.
Community programs, support groups, and recreational activities that foster socialization enable persons with disability to form friendships, gain self-esteem, and reduce isolation.
It is essential to involve the community in ensuring that society embraces everyone before embarking on the development.
