Sustainable Livelihood Development NGO – TRRAIN

Trust for Retailers and Retail Associates of India

Founded in 2011, Trust for Retailers and Retail Associates of India (TRRAIN) is a registered public charitable trust that catalyses change by training and empowering people in retail and allied sectors, as well as creating sustainable livelihoods for persons with disabilities (PwDs) and young women from low-income backgrounds.

Based on our pillars of Pride, Respect, Inclusion and Development, TRRAIN aims to uplift and provide dignity to the often-overlooked heroes of the retail industry – its associates. Through events and celebrations such as the TRRAIN Retail Awards and Retail Employees Day, we instill a sense of pride and showcase the inspiring stories of retail associates who often go beyond their call of duty to provide exceptional service to their customers.

On the other end of the spectrum lies the retail sector in India, which continues to face a supply-demand gap in terms of a skilled, diverse workforce. There is significant potential to address this gap by enhancing training, creating awareness, and enabling the employment of PwDs and marginalized women.

As a leader in this space, TRRAIN, early on, recognized and addressed the needs of the talented youth wanting jobs as well as the enormous retail industry wanting talented, trained and committed employees.

Our Genesis

TRRAIN began following casual conversations as well as a research conducted in the retail sector to determine the sentiment of the front-line workers regarding the pride, respect or dignity they felt in their roles. A second layer of fact finding was also done about the quality of life and opportunities for progress that existed for these employees in their professional and personal lives.
The qualitative and quantitative findings were very dismal. Most of the workers who had been in the industry for decades, neither felt pride and respect, nor did they move up the ladder professionally. Their progress on a personal front too remained close to stagnant.
This inspired the need for a trust which worked closely with this sector – one of the largest in size but also one of the most overlooked. Through programs and events, TRRAIN set out to tackle the identified issues head-on.
Today, TRRAIN works not only in retail but also allied sectors delivering customer service, broadening its own horizons while also offering a bouquet of job options to our vocational trainees.
